"Gilbert Blythe was a tall boy, with curly brown hair, roguish hazel eyes, and a mouth twisted into a teasing smile . . . when the commotion subsided he looked at Anne and winked with inexpressible drollery."
They didn't get off to a good start from there, since he chose to follow that up by calling her "Carrots." She broke a slate over his head. He forgave her long before she forgave him.
In fact, she didn't speak to him for years, and there was certainly a rivalry between the two of them during their Avonlea school days, of the sort of rivalry that comes up between two determined, intelligent people. Sometimes he won, sometimes she did, and sometimes they tied. It was sometimes good-natured, and sometimes less so.
And now, some years later, Gilbert is not quite nineteen, teaching school at White Sands and saving money to go to college. He and Anne have settled most of their rivalry, though there is still some friendly competition going on. And while he's thinking about their friendship growing into something more, he can be careful and patient, and Anne doesn't seem to know.
He still calls her "Carrots." On occasion.
But she hasn't broken a slate over his head in years.
Gilbert Blythe is from the Anne of Green Gables books, and is the property of the heirs of L.M. Montgomery. He appears here solely for the purpose of role-playing in , from which no profit whatsoever is being made. Jonathan Crombie, who is, of course, the definitive Gilbert Blythe, is the property of himself. Presumably.
